About Us

I got diabetes as soon as I moved away from home (probably a Mother’s nightmare). I’m from Delano, MN, and have played hockey and other sports all my life. When I went to Michigan Tech for school in 2020, I felt lethargic working out or playing hockey recreationally. I started losing weight, and my mom mentioned it could be diabetes, but I was adamant it wasn’t. I was eating excessive amounts of chicken, quinoa, and eggs to gain weight back and was insanely thirsty, constantly refilling and chugging water. By Thanksgiving, when my mom forced me to go in, I had dropped from 175 pounds to 139.

For those first years, my diabetes management was unremarkable—roughly 75% in range. My endocrinologist didn’t say I was mismanaging, but I wasn’t excelling either. Just average. The same went for my workouts: consistent for a few weeks, then off for weeks. Motivation dictated my schedule, not discipline.  

That changed when I got a Garmin watch. I loved tracking VO2 Max, race time predictors, and competing with my brothers to log the most miles or steps. It kept me consistent with running and fitness. By my final semester, I realized how much it helped me stay disciplined and imagined how much better my blood sugar management could be with similar stats and competitions tailored to diabetics.  

Just compare: Kid A aimlessly shoots hoops in the driveway because his dad told him to go outside. Kid B competes in a league and strives to win every game. After a month, a year, or 20 years, Kid B’s skills will be far superior.
